Supply of Specialist Teachers of Mathematics

In order to improve the outcome for pupils learning mathematics, there needs to be a strong and sustained supply of teachers with the specialist knowledge and practice to teach mathematics well. Maths Hubs are therefore working with a range of partners to develop high quality specialist subject knowledge development and innovative approaches to recruitment. Some examples are given below.

Teacher Subject Specialism Training

The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) are currently funding the school-led Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST) Programme, which is seeking to improve the mathematics (and physics) subject knowledge of non-specialists. Many Maths Hub Lead Schools and their partner schools are leading TSST maths programmes. The Maths Hubs network will also be seeking to bring TSST maths providers together in regions to encourage knowledge and practice exchange.

Primary SKE programmes

Many primary teachers recognise the need to deepen their specialist subject knowledge for teaching maths. Consequently, many Maths Hubs are running subject knowledge enhancement programmes for primary teachers. These normally combine workshop sessions with gap tasks to carry out within school. Some of the programmes may just focus on particular areas of the curriculum. The Maths Hubs network is also working together to ensure that the best practice and resources for these programmes are effectively exchanged.

International Teacher Recruitment Network Pilot

The NCTL is currently running a pilot scheme to develop international teacher recruitment networks that will support schools seeking to recruit teachers of shortage subjects from non-EEA countries. A group of Maths Hubs in the London and South-East regions are taking part in this pilot and are working together to develop a recruitment network that draws on their expertise for supporting the development of maths teachers.
